If you type “which convert” into a Terminal window you can get the full path to the command. There are a couple of very important aspects to this script, firstly depending on how ImageMagic is installed the “convert” command may be in different locations. As written this script will OVERWRITE the original file(s).

This first example of using ImageMagick is a simple applescript droplet that you can drop a PNG of your structure (or collection of files) onto and it will create an image with the dropped shadow included.

You can download a pre compiled binary or source code from the website or install using MacPorts. ImageMagick is used from the command line and there is an extensive tutorial, it is designed for processing image files but it is NOT a GUI image editor. ImageMagick can be used to resize, flip, mirror, rotate, distort, shear and transform images, adjust image colors, apply various special effects, or draw text, lines, polygons, ellipses and Bézier curves. It can read and write images in a variety of formats (over 100) including DPX, EXR, GIF, JPEG, JPEG-2000, PDF, PhotoCD, PNG, Postscript, SVG, and TIFF. ImageMagick® is a software suite to create, edit, compose, or convert bitmap images. The structures are then dropped onto webpages created using RapidWeaver, within RapidWeaver there is an option to add dropped shadows to images. I use ChemBioDraw to draw the structures and then save as PNG files with a transparent background. One part of the site has a section on bioisosteres including many examples in which the chemical structures are shown with dropped shadows as shown below.
